The sound of back to school is in the air and in the stores. I'm already hearing the
one I dread the most, mom or dad shopping for clothes with their teen or preteen. You know the one. "I'm not wearing that."
"Well that's what you're getting." "I'm not wearing stupid clothes." And on and on.
A few tips to get through this difficult season.
- Discuss what you will be looking for before you get to the store. There will less surprises this way.
-
- Give your kids some choices. You don't have to let them have everything they want or let them
go to school in biker clothes and mini skirts but you can compromise on some items that they like even if you think
they are appalling. After all, they are growing up and will have to face the consequences of their actions, including the
reactions of people to their wardrobe.
-
- Keep in mind school dress codes. That way if they want something that is outside the realm of the
dress code you can remind them of this (nicely) and it won't be your fault. Let them know you are only buying school clothes
right now.
-
- If you do get into a battle at the store, try cutting the shopping trip short. If they think they
aren't getting anything they might suddenly become more agreeable. If not, go home and try again another day. Just don't
wait until the day before school starts. The stress will make you feel like you have to buy something now.

Are your kids struggling with math? It's not uncommon.
Help them get a good grasp on the basics with everyday reminders like counting, sorting and games.
When you are in the store and they want something have them go back and look at the price and tell you how much it
is. If you are letting them spend a certain amount, let them help add up how much it will cost for what they want.
